1. STUDIO INSTRUCTION FOR NON-MAJORS (MUP 061-067)
Studio instruction for non-majors is designed as a 1/2 hour
lesson per week for students not majoring in music but have an interest in
continued study on their instrument or voice. Beginning piano and voice students should
first sign up for class piano for non-majors (MUS 55) or class voice for
non-majors (MUS 136). Students interested in studying a wind instrument,
guitar, or percussion should already have some ability to read music and have
played their instrument before before enrolling. In addition to
tuition and registration fees, there is an additional $200 fee for this class. Students can only sign up
with the approval of the instructor of record through a manual add/drop process
at the West Campus. The following classes are offered:

2. STUDIO INSTRUCTION for MUSIC MAJORS (MUP 161-167; MUP 171-177; MUP 261-267; MUP 271-277)
Music major studio instruction requires a student to be majoring in music and taking the music core classes in sequence with the studio instruction. These classes are also one-on-one instruction 1/2 hour per week. The following classes are required to be taken simultaneously with your MUP studio instruction class:
Semester 1: MUS 125, 127, 141 and MUP 160 series class
Semester 2: MUS 126, 129, 142 and MUP 170 series class
Semester 3: MUS 221, 223, 143 and MUP 260 series class
Semester 4: MUS 225, 227, 144 and MUP 270 series class
In addition to instruction, the student is required to perform on a student recital in the semester they are enrolled and also play a jury for the faculty at the end of the semester. There is no additional fee to register for MUP 161-277. However, students not taking the core music classes listed above in addition to MUP studio instruction will not be approved for MUP 161 or higher and should take the non-major level of MUP studio instruction instead. A student cannot take the MUP 061-067 and any of the MUP 161 or higher courses simultaneously.
The same instructors listed above are available for each instrument and voice beginning with the first semester: MUP 161 Brass, MUP 162 Guitar, MUP 163 Percussion, MUP 164 Piano, MUP 165 Strings, MUP 166 Voice, MUP 167 Woodwinds. The instructor of record is the only person who can sign add/drop forms for studio instruction in their area. They will forward the complete list of names taking studio instruction to the Chair of Performing Arts to compare with class lists.
