We will survey the
structures and functions of the organ systems in the human body, considering
them separately and as interacting systems.
To understand physiology we will study the molecular and cellular
foundations of biology. We also intend
to improve understanding of the process of (doing) science. This course satisfies general education
requirements for transfer students.
Objectives
*Perform activities to demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts of anatomy and physiology such as: describe the scientific process, levels of organization, the structure and function of organelles in a cell, and the names of the body cavities.
*Identify
the bones that make up the human skeleton and describe the structure and
function of bones and joints.
*Compare and contrast the 3 types
of muscle tissue and identify selected major muscle groups and their actions.
*Describe the components of blood
and the direction it flows through the human body.
*Identify the major structures of
the respiratory system and describe their functions.
*Identify the major structures of
the urinary system and describe their functions.
*Identify the major structures of
the digestive system and describe their functions.
*Identify the major structures of
the nervous system and describe their functions.
*Identify the major structures of
the endocrine system and describe their functions.
*Identify the major structures of
the male and female reproductive systems and the steps in the process of fertilization and development and work
simple genetic problems.
Two
connected lecture and lab sessions per week.
Most sessions will contain both lecture and lab activities; lab is
designed to support or teach content – it is not a separate entity. Exams will cover both lecture and lab
content. There are NO PREREQUISITES,
except a desire to learn!

Attendance
You
are expected to come to class on time and stay for the entire class
period. You are expected to do your own
work, be honest, and not be disruptive or disrespectful of others. Breach of the Scholastic Code (e.g.
cheating) will be dealt with severely.
Material from every class will be included on the exams.
In keeping with state regulations
for laboratory safety you must wear approved safety goggles when it is called
for in your laboratory (we will provide these), you must keep the lab space
free of food and drinks, and you must dispose of all sharp instruments,
glassware and chemicals in the prescribed manner. Only registered students are allowed to attend classes.
Pima
County Community College District strives to comply with the provisions of the
Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Students with disabilities requiring special
accommodations must notify the instructor of this need or directly contact the
Disabled Student Resources Office on your campus at the beginning of the
semester.
Grades
are calculated on the standard scale (A=90-100; B=80-90; C=70-80; D=60-70; F=
<60).
The
final day for withdrawal by the student is November 12. Y grades must be requested. A Y grade may have no immediate effect on
your grade point average, but may affect 1) your financial aid and/or veteran’s
certification status, 2) your admission into limited enrollment programs at
other institutions. Incompletes are
given at instructor discretion only if the student has averaged a “C” grade or
better for the course and has completed at least three-fourths of the
coursework.
