Archaeological
Excavation I (ARC 275) offers an introduction to the techniques of
archaeological excavation, mapping, recording, and laboratory procedures.
Students will have the opportunity to excavate prehistoric features while
performing appropriate record keeping including map production. Students also
process the excavated artifacts in the Archaeology Centre's laboratory.
Field experience in the context of a prehistoric archaeological site in the
Tucson area is an integral part of the course. This course is taught every

In the second semester of the course, Archaeological Excavation II (ARC 277),
students learn advanced excavation techniques, field crew supervision, and
participate in selected projects. Skills acquired in this course include
establishing a grid, stratigraphic profiling, data and records management, site
interpretation, crew supervision, and basic backhoe operation. Excavation
II is offered every second fall semester. Performance
