La Quina Site
From 1989 until 1994 PCC faculty, staff, and
students had the exciting opportunity to work at the La Quina Site
in southwest France. The project was established by a collaborative
agreement between the University of Arizona and the University
of Bordeaux (in France). The Pima Archaeology Centre was involved in
the project at the request of the University of Arizona. U of A
recognized the technical mapping and database management expertise
of the Pima College Archaeology Centre faculty, staff, and students
and subsequently provided the opportunity and funding.
This site was occupied by Neanderthals from about 70,000 to
30,000 years ago. The site contained hundreds of thousands of
artifacts. In order to interpret and manage the vast amount of data,
the PCC Archaeology Centre crew electronically mapped the site and
all of the artifacts. Without technical equipment and expertise, the
rapid and effective mapping of so many artifacts would not have been
possible.
