DESCRIPTION:
Wt=4-5 lbs (1.8-2.3 kg) (about the size of a cat). Overall yellowish-tan
with gray back and light belly. Tail black-tipped. Ears large and triangular
and snout thinner compared to Gray Fox.
NATURAL HISTORY: Omnivorous, but mostly feed on kangaroo
rats, other small rodents, and rabbits. Mostly nocturnal. They are
solitary hunters but live with their mate most of the year and both parents
care for the 3-5 young. Kit Foxes are the only members of the dog family
to use dens year-round. Kit foxes, like their kangaroo rat prey, never
have to drink free water, obtaining enough water from the food they eat;
therefore, kit foxes can live in very arid areas.
