DESCRIPTION:
L=8.75" (22cm). Sexes different. Similar to Northern
Cardinals with crest and thick, conical beak, but use thicker, strongly
curved, pale (even yellow) bill in both sexes to distinguish from Northern
Cardinal. Adult male is gray overall, with red on face, crest, wings,
tail, and underparts -- may be quite striking. Female is overall brownish,
with very little red (if present, usually in wings, crest, and underparts,
but much more subtle than in males).
NATURAL HISTORY: Diet of seed, fruit, and insects.
