DESCRIPTION: L=6" (15cm). Sexes dissimilar (sexually dimorphic). Overall brown with streaking, especially on breast. Adult males have red (usually, but can be orange or even yellowish) on front of head, on bib, and on rump. Bill is conical and dark. Female House Finches differ from female House Sparrows by having streaked breast (versus plain brown breast in House Sparrow).
SONG/CALL: Song is fast-paced warbling, often ending with a "wheer" note.
NATURAL HISTORY: Diet is mostly seeds. Native in western U.S., but introduced to Long Island, NY in 1940s and now is common throughout the U.S.
