DESCRIPTION:
WS=7/8 - 1.2" (23-30 mm). Tailed. Upper and lower surfaces gray with
orange and black eye spots at base of hindwing. Post median line of hindwing
has some orange in it. Abdomen is orange in males and gray in females.
Crown of head is reddish-orange in both sexes.
Family Lycaenidae, Subfamily Theclinae.
NATURAL HISTORY: The most common hairstreak in our area, adults fly all
year. Larvae feed on large variety of plants.
The hindwing eyespots and tails look like real eyes and antennae, and
the hindwings are rubbed together when perched to attract a predator's
attack to the non-lethal end of the butterfly.
