DESCRIPTION:
Wt=15-25 lbs (7-11 kg) is most common here, but attains larger sizes farther
north. Overall grayish- to rufous-brown.
NATURAL HISTORY: Omnivorous. May be active any time during the day, depending
on season and other factors. The coyote has come to symbolize the west
and frequently plays a role in Native American tales. The coyote epitomizes
adaptability. They live in most habitats, are opportunistic feeders, and
even vary their social organization (can travel alone, in pairs, or in
packs) depending on conditions. Despite hunting pressures by humans (that
decimate wolf populations), the coyote has flourished, replacing the wolf
over much of the wolf's former range. Coyotes are famous for their yipping
howls, which often are induced by sirens.
