DESCRIPTION:
L=4.5" (11cm), smaller than some hummingbirds. Sexes similar. Overall
gray with yellow head and throat and rufous-colored shoulder patch.
SONG/CALL: Song is a series of 3-4 high notes. Call is a rapid
series of "chip" notes.
NATURAL HISTORY: Typical nest is oval ball of twigs with hole at one end,
usually facing toward wind when built during warm months (for cooling)
and away from wind when built during cool months. Male builds several
nests, and female selects which nest to use for egg-laying. Build other
nests for roosting. Diet consists of small arthropods, fruits, berries,
and seeds. |
