Black-Tailed Gnatcatcher (Polioptila melanura)

DESCRIPTION: L=4-5" (10cm). Small gray bird, with black tail (upper and lower side) and white eye rings. Males, only during breeding period (spring/summer) have a black cap.
SONG/CALL: A distinctive series of "jee" notes (often mistaken for an insect). Call is a drawn out "cheeh.""
NATURAL HISTORY: Usually seen actively searching for insect prey in shrubs and trees. Males and females stay together year-round.
