DESCRIPTION: L=3.75" (10cm). Males and females both are green above. Males have black chin with violet band (seen only in the right light) beneath that contrasts sharply with white throat. Females have white chin and throat that may show faint, green streaks.
CALL: a soft "tchew."
NATURAL HISTORY: Primarily feed on nectar, but also consume insects and spiders. Males court females by flying about 15' above the female, pausing, then descending quickly with a whizzing sound before ascending again (flight path follows a figure 8). Nests are made of plant material bound together and attached to the twig with spider web silk. See Hummingbird Natural History for more.
