Red-spotted Toad (Bufo punctatus)
Red-spotted Toad (Bufo punctatus)

DESCRIPTION: up to 3". Round parotoid glands distinguish the red-spotted toad from other toads here. Color often matches background substrate, ranging from whitish to brownish with little bumps (tubercles) that can appear reddish. Snout somewhat pointed. Male's call sounds similar to that of a cricket.
NATURAL HISTORY: Commonly found along and nearby rocky streams and dry washes (arroyos). Listen for this toad at night following summer rains. This species, unlike other local, native toads, lays eggs singly, rather than in masses.
