COMMON DESERT PLANTS AROUND TUCSON
This section contains 169 species spotlights of the most commonly seen plants in the desert around Tucson (click on buttons above), and background information (see green navigation bar above) necessary to understand the species spotlights. Each spotlight contains one or more pictures of the plant, a description of the plant, and natural history information about the plant. Here the plants are grouped by life form (e.g., trees, shrubs, etc), but you may also see the plants listed and hyperlinked alphabetically by common name, by scientific name, by plant families, and by flower color (also see thumbnails by color to help with identifying an unknown plant). I also have included annotated and hyperlinked lists of the 610 species of plants found in the Tucson Mountains by Rondeau, et al. (1996). See also Wildflowers of Tucson, Arizona by T. Beth Kinsey.
of information for the plant spotlights include: ASDM (2000), Bowers (1993),
Dodge (1985), Earle (1980), Epple (1995), Primer Publishers, (1985), Rondeau
et al. (1996), Rose (2011), and Tucson Citizen (1972).
For traditional O'odham plant names and information, see "At the Desert's Green Edge: An Ethnobotany of the Gila River Pima" by Amadeo M. Rea.
