| Pallid-winged Grasshopper (Trimerotropis pallidipennis) | |
DESCRIPTION:
L=1.5" (37mm). Overall tan, with dark bands. In flight, pale yellow
hindwings trimmed with black are visible.NATURAL HISTORY: Very common. The colorful hindwings serve two functions: 1) attracting mates, and 2) escaping predators (the predator keys in on the color, and then, when the grasshopper lands, it disappears as it folds its wings and becomes camouflaged). |
