Black-Throated Sparrow (Amphispiza bilineata)

DESCRIPTION: L=5.5" (14cm). Sexes same. Overall grayish-brown with black throat and breast and white stripe above and below the eye.
SONG: consists of two high notes followed by a trill (that sounds like the tinkling of a small, ceramic bell). Another form of the song.
NATURAL HISTORY: Called the "ultimate dryland sparrow" by Kenn Kaufman, the black-throated sparrow is a permanent resident. It feeds on seeds, insects, and new shoots.
