DESCRIPTION:
Females weigh 70 lbs (32 kg) or more and males weigh 110k lbs (50 kg)
or more. Overall brown with large ears (like a mule's). Upperside of tail
is white with black tip. Has white rump patch. Antlers have forked tines
off main beam.
NATURAL HISTORY: Herbivorous, both browsing and grazing. Primarily crepuscular,
but can be seen any time of day. Have small home ranges, usually only
1-2 square miles. Breeding occurs December-January, mostly by dominant
males, and fawns are born during the monsoon summer when food is plentiful.
Both males and females will form their own small herds; in winter males
and females will join to form larger herds. Main predator is Mountain
Lion, but Coyotes and Bobcats
will take fawns and the occasional adult. See Horns
versus Antlers versus Pronghorns.
