DESCRIPTION: WS=2.75-3.25" (70-88mm). Upperside chestnut brown with black border containing white spots. Veins outlined in black only on underside of hindwing. Underside hindwing also has a black border with double row of white spots. Compare to Monarch that has veins outlined in black on both the upper and lowersides. Family Nymphalidae, Subfamily Danainae NATURAL HISTORY: Adults seen all year, but most common during warm months. Caterpillars feed on milkweed; adults feed on variety of plants. Distasteful to predators (like the Monarch that also eat milkweed). Males (shown in upper image) have black spots (glands) on upper surface of hindwings which females (shown in lower picture) lack (the spots are white on the lower surface of the hindwing). These glands produce pheromones that attract females.
