Arizona
has about 30 native fish species, but at least twice that many non-native
(also called exotic or introduced species). At least two-thirds of the native
fish species (including the Desert Pupfish and Gila Topminnow) are classified
by the state or federal government as Threatened or Endangered, and the
introduced species are partly to blame. Other causes include dams, water
diversion for irrigation, and drying up of springs and rivers due to overpumping
the ground water. |
